Skip tracing is the art of locating a person who is hard to find. The private investigator must use skill and coercion to locate these types of people.

Skips would include people like: criminals, people hiding from spouses, long lost loves, old friends, and so on. There are many reasons people might need a skip trace. As with most investigations you will be performing, each skip trace will require customized investigations.

Finding people who do not want to be found is a difficult task. In fact, it is the hardest thing a private investigator will ever do. The reason being, when people want you to find some one, they usually have limited information on that person. That means you will probably just have the persons name and a general location to go by.

We will create a few steps to follow to find general information on people. We can’t cover the whole of skip tracing in this article, because it would take about 200-300 pages. Each skip trace will be different, so different material will be needed for each one.

First, you need to do an online search at a free phone listing site. Your skip will probably have an unlisted number, but it is always good to look at the obvious first. Your skip might be hiding in plain site. Use information your client has provided you. Your client may not know where your skip lives, but they do know where the skip used to live. You can narrow your search to those areas for that person’s name.

A lot of times, the client will have a past phone number. You can perform a search for “reverse phone number searches” on any search engine. You can do these for free. Reverse phone number searches allow you to enter a phone number and get the name and address used with that phone number. Using the reverse phone search in combination with searching phone number listings, will often times lead you to your skip.

The next things you need to search are criminal and civil records. By now, you should have some idea of locations your skip has lived in the past. Narrow your search down to the counties your skip lived in the past. Search for the court clerk of each county online. Most counties will have an online listing of records. Look to see if your skip has any records in any of these counties. The court records, if there are any, will lead you to assets, past aliases, and associates. All of this information will be useful in tracking down the skip.

The next thing you are going to have to do is interview people. You are going to have to make phone calls and hit the streets in order to speak with friends, relatives, and business associates of your skip. This should be your final stop. A private investigator must be able to coerce information out of people. You will learn pretty fast once business is rolling in.

As you can see, a private investigator must develop research and interview skills in order to track people down. It is one of the most requested services sought by clients. Spend a lot of time studying this art and practicing the methods needed, as this will be the skill that will set you apart from all on the private investigators.

What is a patent? A patent gives you the exclusive right to use a process or a product which you invented.

What are some examples? Thomas Edison’s electric light, the Salk polio vaccine, the Pentium 4, and the cardboard coffee cup holder are all patented.

What is the philosophy behind patents? One theory is that inventors should be rewarded for their hard work and the time and energy they put into their inventions. Another theory is the utilitarian notion that granting patents leads to the greatest good for the greatest number. This theory can best be understood in economic terms.  If we grant patents businesses and individuals will invest time and capital in developing new processes and products, which in turn will promote economic growth and development.

There is however a countervailing theory that runs against patents. A patent is basically a monopoly, and a monopoly is able to charge higher prices than would be possible with competition. This desire to avoid permanent monopolies helps explain why patent grants are not permanent ?they expire after a certain number of years.

Why would someone want to study patents? Several reasons. First, in order to learn what kinds of inventions can be patented. Second, to learn about what technologies are generating patents. Third, because the inventions themselves are often very interesting.

By reading up on patent cases, you become familiar with the rules governing what is considered a patentable invention and what the procedures are for getting a patent. This teaches you how to spot something that could be patented.

Part of the procedure for getting a patent is to write up what it is you invented. You have to write your claim broad enough to protect your invention, but not too broad so as to claim more than what you actually invented. For example, when Samuel Morse invented the telegraph, he tried to claim every means of sending messages using electricity. If you think about it, that wording would include not only the telegraph, but email as well.

By knowing what technologies are generating patents, you also know what technologies are important in the marketplace. What are some examples? Magnetic Resonance Imaging machines, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, biotech patents involving genetically engineered plants or microorganisms, chemical compounds with medicinal properties, computerized financial services systems, to name a few.

Being familiar with what has been done in the past can give you ideas about what similar things could be done in the future.

Patent disputes often involve new technologies that are very interesting to learn about. The patent literature often includes a great deal of technical information about the technologies involved in a patent dispute. The information is collected, organized, and summarized in a more thorough manner than you would find in a newspaper, but is not so technical that you need a PhD to understand it.

So who here at our company is eligible to submit patent ideas? Electrical Engineers doing design work are good candidates. But software can also be patented if it is new and novel and merits a patent.

The value of patents as intellectual property varies greatly. Some can be worth millions. Some are barely worth the time and cost of filing them.

Others make you smile. While reading about patents, I learned that someone actually patented his golf swing. I will now demonstrate the golf swing for you. To me this seems a little silly. But it also raises some interesting possibilities. As an ice skating enthusiast it makes me wonder if you can patent a new jump in figure skating. If you can come up with the next axel or triple lutz, maybe you can.

While pursuing my interest in patents, I learned of a special summer camp for children called camp invention. This summer camp teaches children about basic science and about famous inventions and their inventors. Children who attended this camp give very favorable reports of it.

Having an interest in patents exposes you to the great inventions and inventors of the past. It recreates some of the excitement of discovery ?of finding a way to use a new technology to solve a real world problem in a way that has never been done before. It also can expose you to new technologies that you did not know about before, and spur you to learn more about them.

Edison said invention was one part inspiration and 99 % perspiration. Be encouraged by these words. Inventors are really problem solvers. As you tackle problems, remember what Edison said.

Should you implement AMP?

By creating an AMP version of your WordPress website, you’re putting speed and readability as top priorities over anything else. Because you wouldn’t be able to use interactive elements like JavaScript on your AMP pages, you might not want to create an AMP version of all of your existing pages.

For instance, you might not want to create a stripped down version of your landing page just for the sake of increasing speed because speed is not the top priority for your landing page but conversion.

On the other hand, you can create AMP pages for your blog posts or news section in which speed and readability are top priorities.

How to implement AMP on your WordPress website:

1. Install WordPress AMP plugin

First things first. Go to your WordPress admin and install the AMP plugin by Automattic.

Upon installation, you can find the AMP version of your blog posts by appending /amp / to your post permalinks. No further configuration is needed.

For example, your AMP URL will look like this:

www.yourdomain.com/blog-post/amp/

If you haven’t enabled pretty permalink on your site, you can find the AMP pages of your blog posts by appending: ?amp=1 instead.

Do keep in mind that, installing this plugin will not currently create AMP pages for your Pages and archives. That’s totally fine because we need AMP pages primarily for blog posts.

2. Customize AMP pages

Simply installing the plugin will create a basic AMP layout for your WordPress blog. If you’d like to customize your AMP template and make it looks similar to your existing website, you may need to edit the CSS of your AMP template.

Alternatively, if you choose to install a plugin instead of hard-coding the template, all you need to do is to install the PageFrog plugin.

This plugin also gives you additional support such as Google Analytics integration on your AMP page.

After activating PageFrog, be sure to activate Google AMP HTML.

However, if you’re using Yoast SEO plugin on your main site, it is better to install Yoast Glue plugin instead of PageFrog.

3. Check if your page is a valid AMP page

So far we’ve implemented AMP pages on your website and slightly customized its layout.

Now it’s your turn to validate the AMP pages you just created.

The problem with AMP integration with your existing WordPress website is that it is very likely that you’ll find tons of AMP errors in your Google Search Console account just after the integration.

But don’t panic and keep in mind that AMP initiative is in its early days and the official AMP plugin isn’t meant to be an all-in-one solution for your AMP pages.

In fact, it just creates a basic AMP layout for your WordPress website. Due to the fact, you may need to find the causes of AMP errors manually and fix them.

As AMP pages are served only through AMP consumers like Google search, fixing all those SEO errors is an essential task in order to ensure that your AMP pages get indexed on search engines and cached on AMP CDN. This CDN also helps third-party websites like Twitter to easily discover and distribute your AMP page quickly to your site visitors.

You can always find AMP errors by logging into Google Search Console account. Once logged in, navigate to Search Appearance> Accelerated Mobile Pages to find errors.

There are a couple of different ways to validate your AMP pages to fix SEO errors:

  • Browser developer console: Simply append #development=1 to your AMP URL and open it in your browser. Once done, you can check validation errors in Chrome DevTools console.
  • Web interface: Alternatively, go to validator.ampproject.org. Enter your AMP page URLs and find errors.

Another thing you need to test on your AMP pages is interlinking your existing blog posts in the intro copy of your blog posts. This practice may help users to stay on longer on your website by navigating to other pages.
